Nine cyclists were hit by a 50-year-old man driving his pickup truck. Five of the nine cyclists were killed and the other four are seriously injured. The driver attempted to flee the seen on foot but was caught by police a short distance down the road.
A few reports were made of the erratic driver in a Blue Pickup truck but nothing was elaborated before the scene of the cycling crash. A neighbor in the area mentioned that the Pickup looked like it had hit a wall with the amount of damage caused in the crash.
“This crash is probably the worst bicycling crash the county has ever seen” says a Michigan Cycling Advocate.
Witness Markus Eberhard told WOOD-TV that he was leaving the park after going fishing when someone yelled at him to watch out. Eberhard said the pickup truck almost ran over his foot before striking the bikers.
“I saw a bunch of bikes hit the front of his truck and a couple of them flew,” Eberhard said.
Another witness, Arika Kruger, told the station “All I heard was a pop and a really big crash noise, we didn’t see anybody walk away.”
We are saddened to hear of the news of these fallen riders. We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends who knew these cyclists. May justice be served to the person that caused this terrible act.
